REVIEW: Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Once Burned
(Night Prince #1)

4.5 HEARTS

Book Blurb

She's a mortal with dark powers...

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...

He's the Prince of Night...

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

When I have a lot to ramble on about I like to cut it down to point form, because to be honest I have self diagnosed ADD and can't even sit through writing my own reviews when they crap on for ages.

~ I'm not a fan of series where the main characters remain the same for the entire series - okay I'm tired, I don't even know what the term is called, but I like books where there is a definitive happily ever after at the end of book one and the following books are about two new people. In saying that, Jeaniene Frost's Cat and Bones series has been the exception to the rule. Are Vlad and Leila as good? Hmm, I don't really think so. Vlad, HELL TO THE YEAH, I want to lick every square inch of that red hot man in soft, slow strokes. But Leila hasn't captured my heart as quickly as Cat did. Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed Leila, but not as much as Cat.

~ I'm also not a big fan of first person stories. Again, Cat and Bones were an exception, but in this book I SOOOOO (yes I'm yelling) badly wanted to hear Vlad's side of the story. I've been obsessed with that sexy ass bad boy since his first mention in the Night Huntress series. So for my own obsessional benefit, I would have loved to learn more about him from an internal perspective.

~ Vlad...Vlad, Vlad, Vlad *sigh* I want to lick him, really I do. I want to suck, lip and nip until he's growling beneath me and begging me to ride him like a pony. And maybe Vlad would never use crass words like "ride me like a pony" but this is my fantasy and funnily enough my ADD has sent me off track again.

All in all, loved this book. Leila had awesome skills and I already want to read more about Shrapnel and the other awesome vamps mentioned.

Am I satisfied? No. Where Vlad is concerned I will never be satisfied...unless I'm riding him like the previously mentioned pony. Maybe a novella could be written where Leila, Vlad and I get it on, but *shrugs* I did thoroughly enjoy the start to my honey bun's series.

***Oh, forgot to mention - There was a lot of 'loin's in this story. No pussy at all, but a hell of a lot of 'loin's. Made me start to wonder if the publisher made her change the wording***

  1. LOL! You're a nut :) Your reviews are so funny! I agree about getting Vlads perspective. I loved this book, but it would have been better if we heard some of his thoughts. He is freakin Dracula...I've waited years (thru the Night Huntress series) to hear HIS story. A little disappointing. Great review Jodie!

    1. I take the nut remark as a compliment :)

Glad you like the review Selena. I so wish it would have been in Vlads POV as well. He is such a honey. Knowing his thoughts would have been perfection.

    2. I meant it as one!! Being a nut is a good thing :)

I know she just announced that she's writing book 2 in the Night Prince series now. Fingers crossed that It from Vlads POV!

  2. Good review! I love anything Jeaniene writes. I'm not big on jumping POV styles so I'm okay with this
