GUEST POST/ GIVEAWAY/ EXCERPT - Until There Was You by Jessica Scott

Book Blurb

He plays by the rules, she’s not afraid to break them. Now these two strong-willed army captains will prove that opposites attract . . .

A by-the-book captain with a West Point background, Captain Evan Loehr refuses to mix business with pleasure—except for an unguarded instance years ago when he succumbed to the deep sensuality of redheaded beauty Claire Montoya. From that moment on, though, Evan has been at odds with her, through two deployments to Iraq and back again. But when he is asked to train a team prepping for combat alongside Claire, battle-worn Evan is in for the fight of his life.

Strong, gutsy, and loyal, Captain Claire Montoya has worked hard to earn the rank on her chest. In Evan, Claire sees a rigid officer who puts the rules before everything else—including his people. When the mission forces them together, Claire soon discovers that there is more to Evan than meets the eye.

He’s more than the rank on his chest; he’s a man with dark secrets and deep longings. For all their differences, Evan and Claire share two crucial passions: their country and each other.

Thanks so much for having me here today! I was chatting with Jodie about what she wanted me to talk about and we figured out that other than hamsters, I might want to talk about what makes a sexy hero.

I'll be honest, I'm picky about my heroes. I guess I'm a blue collar hero kind of gal. A man who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, who has strong, rough hands capable of real gentleness.

So what's the recipe for a good hero? For me, you have to start with the character of the man. In the army we have the army values and honestly, I think a man who upholds those values is pretty darn sexy. If I had to pick one, I'd have to say honor was the number one value. An honorable man isn't going to lie to the heroine. He's not going to cheat or steal. Hell be honest and forthright and steadfast and loyal.

Now that we've got the character of the man nailed down, what about physical traits? I'm a shoulders gal. There is nothing sexier than strong shoulders. To me, they're symbolic of strength both physically and personally. And I love a tattooed hero. There's something sexy about ink on muscles.

Below is an excerpt where the heroine of my next book UNTIL THERE WAS YOU discovers the hero's tattoo. There's a heck of lot more to the story than just ink!

She slipped her hands beneath his shirt, her palms flat against the smooth muscles of his back. He stiffened beneath her touch and in that moment, realization dawned on her.

He didn’t have nearly as much control as he wanted her to think.

She lifted the hem of his shirt, just a little, dragging one nail along the edge of his pants. Across the small of his back. He shivered but didn’t move. His hands clenched at his sides, a fierce restraint, his breath shallow and quick. She flattened her palms against his back, sliding them up against the raw silk of his skin, dragging his shirt higher and leaning back to take in the pure masculine beauty of his body.

She froze at what she had revealed. Holding her breath, she pushed the shirt over his shoulders until he finally reached down and tugged it the final distance over his head.

He stood stiff and straight for her inspection. His eyes were closed, his shoulders

rigid, his head bowed, his breath harsh and ragged.

“You’re just full of surprises, aren’t you, Captain America?” she murmured.

Tentatively, she reached out, tracing the gnarled roots of an old oak tree, tattooed in black at the base of his rib cage. It curled and twisted over his left deltoid, the black, gothic branches spreading over his shoulder and halfway down his bicep and the left side of his chest.

This was not a tattoo that someone did for fun. This was a memorial. This was pain. A wicked, vicious inscription carved into his flesh.

BIO:

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats, three dogs and two escape-artists hamsters, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She has commanded two companies, served in Germany, Korea, Fort Hood and Iraq, and been lucky not to get fired. She is a terrible cook and an even worse
housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.
