While perusing the Omnific Publishing table at the Thursday afternoon ebook signing at RT we stumbled upon this huge poster of a hottie in a tie and not much else. One of the Omnific reps proceeded to tell us that said hottie had just written a book was going to be at RT on Saturday mingling and taking pictures. So I literally stopped said author in his tracks in the middle of one of the aisles during the huge book signing to introduce myself. Well that and to snuggle up for a photo of course. That author turned out to be Dr. Ivan Rusilko who is one half of the hottest writing duos at Omnific Publishing right now. The other would be his partner in crime the lovely Everly Drummond. Their book, The Winemaker's Dinner - Appetizers, was the talk of RT and is due to hit bookshelves everywhere on July 31st. Literally women were following him around there like he was the Pied Piper! And I don’t blame them. Dr. Ivan is not only one fine male specimen but one of the nicest guys I have ever met. And today I’m lucky enough to have him here to shoot the breeze about his upcoming book and lots of other yummy things too.
So help me give a warm Riverina Romantics welcome to the very talented and very sexy Dr. Ivan Rusilko. Ladies, the doctor is official in. *wink*
Delilah: Hi Ivan! It’s a pleasure to chat with you again and to have you here with us today.
Ivan: It’s an honor to be here and the pleasure is all mine, I assure you.
Delilah: For those who don’t know I got the supreme pleasure of doing an interview at RT with Ivan that Dateline NBC taped. Whether or not they will ever use it who knows but I quite enjoyed spending a little quality time with him. Ivan how did it feel having them follow you and Everly around the convention? I mean literally, you all had just been signed by Omnific Publishing not long before that.
Ivan: Well the enthusiasm that grew exponentially literally minutes after the press release about the book hit the circuits was a bit much even for me. I honestly wasn’t expecting anything really crazy to happen that quickly and was content just saying a publisher actually signed us. I always say that Id rather be lucky than good, but then again luck favors the prepared. The RT convention was a whole new ballgame set on a totally different stage… but it is one that I definitely enjoyed!
Delilah: Hmmm, if I remember correctly while sitting there your cologne was yummy. Remind me again what you were wearing?
Ivan: Ah yes, the cologne. 75% of the questions I was asked in my ten second interviews with passing by erotic/romantic novel enthusiasts was “What is the yummy cologne you are wearing?” I guess my years of wearing Polo Blue may have been a smart move.
Delilah: Tell us how you and Everly Drummond first got together.
Ivan: Randomly. She had contacted me about using my name and image for a novel she wanted start. After some hem and hawing I asked if we could collaborate, allowing me the opportunity to write about my past “romantic triumphs and tragedies” - my romantic memoirs if you will, and she help shape it into a novel which she does so, so well. It was a great little partnership and a hell of a good “virtual” time.
Delilah: You easily could have given Everly the ok to just use your likeness for a character in one of her books. What made you want to jump in and collaborate with her?
Ivan: Well allowing your name and image to be used for anything is a risk. Allowing it to be used in a romantic/erotic novel is a gigantic risk… make that possible brand assassination. I have lived a rather unique life and have been lucky enough to partake in experiences people dream of, or read about ;), so getting to share them through the written word was an opportunity this former farm boy couldn’t pass up.
Delilah: What have you enjoyed most about the whole writing process with so far and do you think a male perspective on romance is different from a woman’s?
Ivan: Honestly I have nothing to really hide and I have no real regrets, so being able to share the romantic moments in my life, both heart breaking and heart making, is something that I found to be therapeutic and enjoyable. Writing the “fun parts” was of course icing on the cake. With regard to the male vs female perspective, I believe it may help women have an insight into what turns men on. I mean, I know what trips my trigger but does she?? Take 50 Shades of Grey. Who would have thought a BDSM story about a woman being made into a submissive would grow to become one of the fastest selling books worldwide? Men sure wouldn’t have!
I kinda see all the erotic novels out there written by women as tools SMART men should utilize to figure out how to get into that all too elusive mind of their female counterparts. The “How to Turn Women On For Dummies,” if you will.
The Winemaker's Dinner however is a tool for women to utilize when trying to understand what sparks that erotic flame in the minds of their men and understand what turns them on. The “How to Turn Men On For Dummies”. I basically want to be the masked, or rather un-masked magician that spills the beans on all the tricks that get us guys going.
Delilah: Even though you are in Miami and Everly is in Toronto you guys have seemed to have found a writing system that has worked. Tell us what the normal writing day looks like for the two of you?
Ivan: Normal day? Doesn’t exist. When writing TWD 1 I would be cramming in a chapter here and there in between medical studies, work and exercise. These chapters would be electronically shot all the way up north to Everly who did her magic and then sent them back to me. With a minor tweak her and there we would agree and forge on. TWD 2 is well under way and it is going good… almost too good ;)!
Delilah: You definitely have caught the writing bug. I read somewhere that you are in the middle of writing a dramatic medical romance. How is that going?
Ivan: Well I started it to keep myself busy. I’m not going to lie writing is addictive. It is going great but has been officially put on hold until the TWD madness has subsided. So hopefully in 20 years I can pick that back up. That of course relies on all you Riverina Romantic readers and the response to TWD!!
Delilah: I recently saw a Twitter picture of you blushing while you were reading The Winemaker’s Dinner. Honestly, just how hot are your sexcapades if even you can’t read them without turning red?!
Ivan: I still turn red every time. Yes, it’s all rather hot, so be prepared. For me, reading them is something special because it’s not only a turn on (yes men get turned on to through the written word), but for me, it’s also reliving the situation that the particular “Scene” is based on. I have had the honor of sharing some magical moments with some mystical girls… so the readings I am doing are one of a kind and each time an extremely personal for me and those in the audience… I hope. ahahaha
Delilah: After seeing that picture I mentioned to Everly it would be a great marketing plan to throw in two or three AA batteries with each book purchase. *wink wink* Your thoughts on that?
Ivan: Funny you should mention that. As a specialist in women’s sexual health there may be something in the works that those batteries could go with… medically of course!
Delilah: Tell us a little bit about Mollydooker Wines – www.mollydookerwines.com. I know you hinted that something happened during the winemaker’s dinner you attended in Napa for them that sparked the idea behind the story for the book.
Ivan: Yes. The book series name, The Winemaker's Dinner, was inspired by an event in Napa where I was invited by the Mollydooker team to represent, “The Boxer,” which is one of their Shiraz’s. The organization is very special to me as are those who operate it. While at the event there was… well I think you guys should read the first few chapters to find out why it was so special… haha
Delilah: What is your favorite Mollydooker Wine? I myself am a HUGE Shiraz fan and the 2010 The Ringmaster General McLaren Vale Shiraz caught my eye while perusing their website.
Ivan: That is too funny! For me, it’s Velvet Glove. I have had every wine on this earth, I think. From my homemade wine that my father and I made in our basement, to bottles that cost more than a down payment on a house and I keep coming back to my GLOVE. It has been a key role in some enchanting evenings, too. Bar none the best Shiraz, hands down!
Delilah: You recently started your own blog where you have a section called Music for the Soul and music obviously has played an important part in your life. Tell us what bands came across your playlist while you were penning The Winemaker's Dinner.
Ivan: Well again your hammer is hitting my nail right on the head. The answer to this question will be glaring obvious come July 31st. But as a general answer I would say that I am an old soul in a young body that should have grown up in the Skynard, Petty, Floyd, Zeppelin, and Young days. Toss in some Buffet, Dave Matthews, O.A.R., and Pearl Jam and we’ve got ourselves a show.
Delilah: I’ve got to ask. What’s your favorite song to get down and dirty to?
Ivan: It is relative, my dear. Does it involve a balcony or a cabin (you will get this later trust me)? One can never fail with some Marvin Gay followed by some Joe Cocker. And yes I may have a play list programmed for such occasions.
Delilah: It was just announced that Divalysscious Moms are going to host the launch party for The Winemaker’s Dinner in New York City on July 31st. How exciting for you and Everly. What can the ladies expect at the launch?
Ivan: Yes! The whole team is extremely excited and happy to partner with the hottest group of moms on the planet for the book debut party July 31st. The event will be such a great time. There will be wine, readings, mingling, schmoozing, Q&A and a whole lot more. It will be a one of a kind event so make sure you all sign up with the moms and RSVP… there will be some surprises their I assure you for those who attend. If you’re in the tri-state area and can be in the city on July 31 – be sure to RSVP for the event! Attendance is limited so sign up quick!! http://divamoms.com/?p=5310 firstname.lastname@example.org .
Delilah: I love the logo for your website www.ivanrusilko.com. Who came up with that very unique snake design? *NOTE: This design below is slightly different that the one used on Dr. Ivan's site.*
Ivan: I had contacted my website designer and asked him to send me mock ups of my name with the “I” transformed into the Staff of Asclepius which is the true medical symbol. The two snakes are the symbol for Hermes and have nothing to do with medicine actually which is rather funny. He came back with a bunch and when I saw that logo, I was sold. Simplicity can sometimes make the most profound statement. You all may be seeing that in others places this year too ;).
Delilah: Tell us about your obsession with photography. You have several photos you have taken posted on your site. Being a bit of a photography buff myself I can tell you have a great eye. This photo is one of your favorites that you have taken.
Ivan: Photography to me is an expression of a moment in time. That moment will never happen again and is only truly beautiful to those who share in it. The world is a beautiful place that sometimes is taken for granted due to the phones, games, and computers. But if you slow down and really look… you will realize that you are living in a masterpiece… so appreciate it.
Delilah: I belong to this very erotic fan forum and we all tend to have very delicious looking avatars. Imagine my surprise when I find out that one of the pictures (at left) that I have been staring at for the past year is yours. You certainly do get around. *chuckle*
Ivan: Yes, I’ve come to find that my image does pop up in all sorts of places. I find it groovy. At first I was concerned about this and about that. Now the more obscure or strange the place I find it, the more honored I feel. To a point of course! I didn’t find it amusing at the RT convention to be asked about how it felt to be a cover model for the book coming up called, The Winemaker's Dinner. I just chuckled and said I hear the author was a bum and when they realized I was a co-author, the reactions were priceless.
Delilah: I’m definitely a tattoo girl but I never got the chance to fully check out the one on the inside of your left wrist. Tell me a little bit about it and the one on your upper back. And are those the only ones you have?
Ivan: Tattoos are addictive and yes, I do have three currently. Each one is for a family member. The two on my back for my mother and dad and the one on my left wrist for my brother. My sister’s tat is on the way and will take residence on the other wrist. Every aspect of the tattoos is meaningful and special to me so I wear them with honor. Explaining them to patients is another story…
Delilah: Family is obviously very important to you. And even though you have been a public figure since your body building competition days, the release of The Winemaker’s Dinner is going to show people everywhere a very sexual side of you through written word. Does your family have any reservations about what is in the book?
Ivan: Well at first my mother did, but after some politically crafted explaining, she understood that it isn’t just me writing smut. It is me expressing myself as a medical professional who specializes in women’s wellness that has sexuality as the cornerstone. The story, I like to believe, is a beautiful one and has meaning. It doesn’t consist of me showing up as a cable man to some unsuspecting busty blonde's house who just so happens have an even bustier brunette friend. It is about love and sacrifice and through it all there is a significant thread of truth. She should know she is in it. She got to read some of it this past weekend and actually said she was proud of me. No she didn’t read any steamy parts and she is banned from doing so, as is my sister. Family comes first, no doubt.
Delilah: Both of us are from the Pittsburgh area originally and I know you played hockey back in the day. Now that the season is over we can commiserate together on the fact that our favorite team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, didn't go so far in the playoffs. If you tell me who your favorite player is I’ll tell you mine. *Hint it’s a tie between Fleury and oh so sexy Kris Letang.*
Ivan: If we’re talking about how a player looks, I think we might have differing opinions. Give me a toothless smile and crooked nose and Ill give you the definition of a hockey player. Crosby and Malkin are my current faves…both rock stars minus their “fragile” bodies. haha. But Mario Lemieux, playing through cancer and all, is my all-time favorite. Pay attention for that to come into play as well in the book ;) .
Delilah: Up last tell us five things about yourself that we would be surprised to know!
1. Extremely Shy
2. Grew up milking cows, bailing hay, and shoveling ^%$*
3. Floyd Head
4. Would have loved to been professional photographer or cook
5. My Super Bowl -> President at 35
Delilah: Thanks for hanging out with us today Dr. Ivan. I for one can’t wait to get my hands on The Winemaker's Dinner - Appetizers. I wish you and Everly all the best in your new adventure together!!
Ivan: It is always a pleasure and I am so looking forward to cross paths again really soon… come to NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies if what I hear about the book is true my marketing idea is right on track. *grin* You can find out more about Dr. Ivan and The Winemaker's Dinner book series here:
